    CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE 141ST ANNIVERSARY OF GREEK INDEPENDENCE WERE STAGED IN CYPRUS MARCH 24/25. THEY WERE HELD AGAINST A BACKGROUND OF UNREST - TWO TURKISH CYPRIOT MOSQUES IN THE GREEK QUARTER OF NICOSIA WERE DAMAGED BY BOMBS, AND THERE WERE REPORTS THAT GUN-RUNNING FROM THE GREEK AND TURKISH MAINLAND TO THE ISLAND HAS REACHED SERIOUS PROPORTIONS.

    THE CELEBRATIONS BEGAN MARCH 24 WITH A CEREMONY AT THE GREEK ARMY CONTINGENT'S CAMP IN NICOSIA. THE BISHOP SUFFRAGAN OF TRIMITHUS OFFICIATED AT A TE DEUM SERVICE, ATTENDED BY MANY PROMINENT PERSONALITIES. THEY INCLUDED: THE AMBASSADORS OF GREECE AND TURKEY, THE PRESIDENT OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, MINISTERS, THE COMMANDER OF THE TURKISH ARMY CONTINGENT, THE COMMANDER OF THE CYPRUS ARMY. AND BRITISH AND UNITED STATES MILITARY ATTACHES.

    THEN OFFICERS AND MEN STAGED A MARCH-PAST. NEXT DAY, GREEK CHILDREN FROM ALL SCHOOLS IN NICOSIA GATHERED AT PHANEROMENI CHURCH FOR A SERVICE. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A BIG PARADE THROUGH THE FLAG-BEDECKED STREETS; AND THE CHILDREN WEPE JOINED BY BOY SCOUTS AND MEMBERS OF OTHER YOUTH MOVEMENTS.
