Background: Soccer...and the Egyptian team took a further step towards the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games when they defeated Madagascar in Cairo on Friday (21 December). The match was played before a massive crowd of a hundred thousand.
SYNOPSIS: Egypt playing left to right in the white shorts started favourites in front of their home crowd for this the second leg of the tie. The first match played in Madagascar ended in a one-all draw. From the start of the game it was obvious this was going to be another close tussle and both sides spend some time sizing each other up.
However halfway through the first half it was Madagascar who started applying the pressure. A move started by the visitors defence developed into a breakaway chance for the Madagascar striker Kira. One nil to Madagascar.
The breakback came minute later. Egypt were on attack in Madagascar's penalty area when the goalkeeper Ferdinaind fouled an Egyptian player in his attempt to reach the ball. And Egypt's El Khatib made no mistake with the penalty.
At full-time the score was still one all and the match was decided on penalties. First to shoot was El Khatib for Egypt.
Albert took this shot for Madagascar. And his miss spelt defeat for his side.
