    THE SOUTH AFRICAN MIGHT HAVE GUESSED THE OUTCOME BEFORE HE DROVE OFF FROM THE FIRST TEE IN THE 18TH HOLE PLAY-OFF. ALTHOUGH HE IS THE 1962 PROFESSIONAL GOLF ASSOCIATION CHAMPION, HE HAS NEVER WON A PLY-OFF IN EIGHT PREVIOUS ATTEMPTS. NICKLAUS PRESSED HIS ADVANTAGE THROUGHOUT THE MATCH AFTER TAKING THE LEAD ON THE FIRST HOLE.
