INTRODUCTION: The President of Niger, Ivory Coast and Togo arrived in Upper Volta on Wednesday (30 March) for a summit conference on topics of mutual interest.

SYNOPSIS: The Presidents arrived at Ouagadougou airport and were greeted by the head of state for Upper Volta, Sangoule Lamizana. Benin's President, Mathieu Kerekou was unable to attend. Similar meetings have been held for the past 17 years to promote further understanding between the five countries.

The first to arrive was President Seyni Kountche of Niger. In a joint statement after the meeting he and the other leaders expressed other their indignation at the murder of the Congo's President Marien Ngouabi.

President Felix Houphouet-Boigny of the Ivory Coast was next to arrive. The leaders also discussed bilateral relations and noted, with satisfaction, the good co-operation that exists between their countries.

The subject of southern Africa was also discussed at length. The communique at the end of the meeting condemned apartheid and called for total and immediate independence for Namibia. It deplored the breakdown of the Geneva peace conference of Rhodesia.
