  • Description

Frank "Three Fingers" Coppola, and three other Mafia suspects have been arrested in Rome and brought by train to Palermo.

This film, from Visnews Palermo cameraman Pietro Schimmenti, shows three of the arrested -- Coppola, Giusto Sciarabba, Giuseppe Mangiapane and Giovambattista Brusca -- arriving in Palermo handcuffed and under heavy police guard.

The four were considered by police to have been involved in the escape of Italy's most wanted man -- Mafia boss Luciano Liggio -- from a Rome clinic in 1969. The arrests follow a wide round-up of Mafia suspects throughout Italy, which began after the killing of the Palermo Public Prosecutor in the streets of Palermo last May.

SYNOPSIS: Frank "Three Fingers" Coppola, an alleged Mafia boss both in Italy and the United States, arrived in Palermo, Sicily on Saturday - under arrest. With him were three other suspected Mafia chiefs, handcuffed and under heavy police guard. Coppola and the others were immediately whisked off to jail on arriving by train. They were arrested in Rome on Friday, and have been charged with offences which include criminal conspiracy, drug trafficking and smuggling. Their arrest followed three years of intensive investigation by the Carabinieri, the Italian special police.

Nationwide raids by Carabinieri and police have also brought the arrests of two suspected Mafiosi in Milan, two in Palermo, one in Taranto, and one in Rimini. From Venice, the Carabinieri announced they had arrested 140 people in the area over the past three days, either because a warrant was out for their arrest, or because they were caught in the act of committing a crime. Coppola has been arrested for at least the sixth time. He is believed to be about 75 years old. He was deported from the United States in 1948 for alleged connections with the Mafia, otherwise Known as the Cosa Nostra. He was said by American officials at the time to be an associate of the infamous Lucky Luciano and other notorious gangsters.

His arrest follows a wide round-up of Mafia suspects which began after the killing of the Palermo Public Prosecutor in the streets of Palermo last May. Coppola and the three other suspects brought to Palermo by train, Giusto Sciarabba, Giusseppe Mangiapane and Giovambattista Brusca, were also suspected by police to have been involved in the escape of Italy's most wanted man -- Luciano Liggio, another Mafia boss - from a Rome clinic in 1969.
