The Unionist Progressive Party is one of three created last year. It has only two seats in the 360 member parliament. Khalid Mohieddin, its leader, is a former colleague of President Sadat in the Free Officers' Movement which, under the late President Nasser, toppled the monarchy in 1952.

Background: INTRODUCTION: In Cairo on Saturday (29 January) President Anwar Sadat and Premier Mamdouh Salem blamed the Soviet Union for trying to incite class conflict in Egypt and the opposition left-wing Unionist Progressive party and unspecified secret communist organisations for plotting last week's riots. 79 people were killed, hundreds were injured and millions of Egyptian pounds (equivalent to pounds sterling) worth of damage were done in the riots which were against proposed government food price rises.

SYNOPSIS: President Sadat made his comments at a meeting of trade union leaders. He said he thought the Soviet Union had understood the lessons of the past but they still believed in bloody class conflict and did not understand social peace.

President Sadat added that reading the foreign press, the three countries in the world which gloated over the bloody riots were the Soviet Union, Israel and Libya. But he said that despite the troubles the government would not reopen detention camps or return to undemocratic methods.

The same day in the National Assembly building, Premier Salem was speaking to parliament. He said the food price riots were part of a leftist plot to seize power and that leaflets issued by some secret communist organisations proved this. Premier Salem also expressed deep regret over what he called the disgraceful involvement of the Unionist Progressive party in this terrible crime.
