Background: About 10,000 people crowded into the centre of Athens on Friday (9 May) to celebrate May Day -- which had been postponed for a week because I May was Holy Thursday celebrated by the Greek Orthodox Church.

At similar mass rallies throughout the country the workers called on pay increases and better working conditions.

In Athens red flags and placards bearing Communist slogans were much in evidence.

The crowds were addressed by labour leaders including the Deputy -President of the Labour Confederation. Actresses Melina Morcouri and Anna Synodinou were among the crowd.

After the meeting in Kotzias Square the crowd moved on to the nearby Polytechnic School to pay tribute to the 34 people killed in clashes when Government troops stormed the campus in November 1973. The troops had been ordered to evict about 5,000 students who had demanded the resignation of the military regime then in power.
