  • Description

As Kenyans queued to register as voters for general elections to be held later this year, there was condemnation of illegal practices involved in the registration by Vice-President Daniel Arap Moi.

Vice-President Moi warned that cheating could lead to votes being nullified in the areas concerned.

In a statement on Monday (April 29) he said he had heard of people being transported by lorries to register as voters in more than one area so a s to sell their voting cards. Three people were sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to trying to register twice.

A Nairobi newspaper criticised the fact that identification papers were not being asked for at registration centres.

Although Kenya is a one party state and all candidates represent the ruling Kenyan African National Union, (KANU) more than one candidate stands in each constituency and campaigning is fierce.

In the last general election in 1969 more than two-thirds of the sitting members of the National Assembly were defeated. The date of the general and local elections has yet to be set.

Registration has been going on all over Kenya for more than a week and students have been helping the provincial administration. This time the voting age will be lowered from 21-18.
