Background: DELEGATES FROM SOUTH AFRICA, RHODESIA, TANZANIA, KENYA, NIGERIA AND GHANA ARE AMONG THOSE ATTENDING THE LEVERHULME INTER-UNIVERSITY CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE EDUCATION WHICH OPENED IN BLANTYRE, MALAWI ON MONDAY (25 MARCH).

THE CONFERENCE IS THE SIXTH IN A SERIES OF BIENNIAL MEETINGS ON EDUCATION FINANCED FROM FUNDS PROVIDED THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF THE LEVERHULME TRUST. THE PRESIDENT OF MALAWI, THE NGWAZI DR. BANDA, WAS TO HAVE OPENED THE CONFERENCE, BUT UNFORTUNATELY THESE PLANS CLASHED WITH PRESSING GOVERNMENTAL COMMITMENTS. HE DID HOWEVER SEND A MESSAGE TO THE DELEGATES, WHICH WAS READ BY THE VICE- CHANCELLOR OF MALAWI: UNIVERSITY, MR. IAN MICHAEL.

SPEAKING FOR THE NGWAZI, MR. MICHAEL POINTED OUT THAT THOUGH THE DELEGATES CAME FROM MANY DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, WITH MANY DIFFERENCES, THEY CAME AS SCHOLARS AND TEACHERS WHO HAD IN COMMON URGENT EDUCATIONAL PROBLEMS WHICH NEEDED TO BE STUDIED TOGETHER. 'THOSE WHO REALLY SENT US, 'SAID MR. MICHAEL, 'ARE OUR PUPILS - AND ON THEIR BEHALF WE HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO DURING THESE NEXT SIX DAYS.'
