  • Description

In Leopoldville, Sept 15 - as Ghanaian UN troops took up positions in the streets and guarded Mr Lumumba at Camp Leopold before taking him back to his residence - soldiers of the Congolese Army, reinforced by units from the garrison at Thysville where the Army's mutiny began over two months ago, spread throughout the city.

Armoured cars from Thysville cruised menacingly through the streets and jeeps of the Congolese Army surrounded the Central Post Office, after a crowd of 300 Abako supporters of President Kasavubu had tried to stage an anti-Lumumba demonstration outside the building.

For a time it was believed the Thysville units were supporting Mr Lumumba and there were reports that Colonel Mobutu had been arrested. This soon proved to be wrong, and when Mr Lumumba was variously attacked by Congolese soldiers before being transferred to his home under a guard of Colonel Mobutu's gendarmes, there was little doubt about who had the sympathies of the majority of the Congolese Army.
