After it was announced in Cairo May 30 that the United Arab Republic had severed diplomatic relations with South Africa, Mr. Cornelius Hendrik Taljaard, the South African Minister-designate, and his family left Cairo Airport the following day to return to Pretoria.
Before boarding a 'Comet' of the Greek Olympic Airways, Mr. Taljaard shook hands with and had a few words of advice for Mr. C.A. Bastiaanse, the South African Charge D'Affaires, who will supervise the formalities of closing the Legation before handing over the a neutral custodian.
Text of the U.A.R. announcement said that owing to its apartheid policy the United Arab Republic had decided not to recognise the new South African Republic, and would withdraw its diplomatic mission from Pretoria. This step was quickly imitated by Ghana, and Liberia has ordered a political and commercial boycott of the new republic that came into being May 31.
