  • Description

The President of Hungary's Presidential Council, Pal Losonczi, flew into Lagos on Monday (12 November) on the first leg of a four-nation African tour.

He was greeted at the airport by the Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, and senior members of the federal military government.

On Tuesday (November 13) the two Heads of State discussed world problems and bilateral relational at General Gowon's residence. At the same time, senior officials of both countries held secret talks on trade, economic, scientific and cultural cooperation.

Nigeria and Hungary are already linked by two agreements, signed in 1963, on trade and cooperation in the scientific and technical fields. Trade between the two countries last year totalled 2.4 million Naira (about 1.5 million pounds sterling). Nigeria imported food preserves, industrial machinery, textiles, pharmaceutical and laboratory equipment and exported coca beans, rubber and timber to Hungary.

President Losonczi flew to Kano, in Nigeria's drought-stricken northern region on Tuesday (13 November). Several Hungarian experts are working for the Nigerian government in the region.

President Losonczi was to leave Lagos on Thursday (15 November), bound for Ghana, Sierra Leone and Tunisia.
