  • Description

President Kenyatta opened a summit meeting of the Angolan nationalist leaders in Nakuru, Kenya, on Monday (16 June) with an appeal for the three rival liberation movements to order an immediate ceasefire to halt bloodshed in the territory.

At this State House, the Kenyan President urged the three leaders to return to the spirit of unity which they achieved in their meeting in Mombasa in January also under his chairmanship. He also called on them to unify their armed forces.

President Kenyatta held a one-hour private talk with the three leaders -- Mr. Holden Roberto of the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (F.N.L.A.), Dr. Agostinho Neto of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (M.P.L.A.), and Dr. Jonas Savimbi of the National Union for Total Independence (U.N.I.T.A.) -- before he formally opened the summit meeting.

He told them that the unity achieved at their previous meeting in Mombasa had pleased the entire African continent--but not Africa's enemies who were exploiting the situation in Angola. More than a thousand people have been killed in recent fighting there between the three factions.

The summit was delayed for 24 hours when Dr. Neto of the Marxist-orientated M.P.L.A. failed to arrive on time. Dr. Neto later said confident civil war in Angola could be averted.

The meeting, expected to last four to five days, is aimed at resolving the leaders' differences before their territory attains independence from Portugal on November 14.
