At first, the Wright brothers had difficulty in convincing anyone that they had a marketable proposition. But in 1908, they were able to arrange for their aircraft to be built in Europe under licence; and a year later, they won a contract from the United States Army for the world's first military aircraft. Wilbur Wright died of typhoid fever in 1912 at the age of 45; but Orville lived until 1948.

Background: Just 75 years ago, on December 17th 1903, the Wright brothers put the first powered aircraft into flight in the United States. A powered bi-plane glider, which they designed and built themselves, left the ground without assistance and made four shot flights at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk in North Carolina.

SYNOPSIS: Wilbur and Orville Wright were bicycle makers from Dayton, Ohio, obsessed with flying. The aircraft which was to make history was evolved from gliders, in which they developed the controls. It fell to Orville, the younger brother, by the toss of a coin, to take it into the air. The propellers and a light enough engine were specially designed by the brothers themselves.

The first flight lasted 12 seconds; the fourth, almost a fully minute. Within three years, the brothers had designed a machine which could stay in the air for more than half an hour.
