  • Description

SOUTH VIETNAM'S RULING MILITARY JUNTA TODAY (SUNDAY) CALLED OFF ITS TWO-WEEK-LONG ATTEMPT TO ISOLATE THE BUDDHIST-DOMINATED NORTHERN CITY OF HUE. ON THURSDAY ANOTHER ANTI-GOVERNMENT DEMONSTRATION WAS HELD IN HUE. DEMONSTRATORS HANDED A PETITION IN THE UNITED STATES CONSULAR REPRESENTATIVE CALLING FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE JUNTA BY AN ELECTED GOVERNMENT.

FOLLOWING THE JUNTA'S DECISION, THE NATIONAL AIRLINE WAS ALLOWED TO OPERATE FLIGHTS INTO HUE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE EARLY APRIL, AND POSTAL SERVICES FROM SAIGON, 400 MILES (ABOUT 640 KILOMETRES) TO THE SOUTH, WERE RESUMED.

THE CITY'S ANTI-JUNTA GROUPS, HOWEVER, ANNOUNCED THEY WOULD CONTINUE THEIR STRUGGLE TO TOPPLE THE JUNTA IMMEDIATELY. ABOUT 50 GROUPS HAVE HELD STREET DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE COUNTRY'S NINE RULING GENERALS FOR THE PAST MONTH. LEADERS OF THE CITY'S 10,000 PREDOMINANTLY BUDDHIST UNIVERSITY AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SAID THEY WOULD CONTINUE TO BOYCOTT CLASSES INDEFINITELY. THEIR STRIKE BEGAN THREE WEEKS AGO.

OPPOSITION AT HUE CONTINUES IN DEFIANCE OF A BUDDHIST CHURCH ORDER TO STOP AGITATION AND ACCEPT THIS WEEK'S DECREE BY THE JUNTA THAT AN ELECTION OF A CIVILIAN GOVERNMENT WILL BE HELD BY MID-SEPTEMBER.
