  • Description

For one hour on April 27 morning the busy bustle of city life came to a complete standstill in Jannina, Greece. The only sound was the mournful tolling of church bells.

Jannina - within 30 miles of the Albanian border - capital of the Epirus region, north west Greece, was observing an hour long silence strike in support of Greece's claim to northern Epirus, occupied by Albania since World War Two.

The strike, organised by patriotic groups led by Jannina's Bishop Serafe???m, was provoked by recent Albanian radio broadcasts alleging the Greek claim to northern Epirus was supported only by a "handful of Greek fascists".

In 1946, a Foreign Ministers' Conference in London recognised Greece had a claim pending in respect of northern Epirus.
