MR. Z.A. BHUTTO'S PAKISTAN PEOPLE'S PARTY HELD AN ELECTION CAMPAIGN MEETING IN KARACHI ON SUNDAY?

  • Description

MR. Z.A. BHUTTO'S PAKISTAN PEOPLE'S PARTY HELD AN ELECTION CAMPAIGN MEETING IN KARACHI ON SUNDAY (4 JANUARY) -- THE FIRST PUBLIC MEETING IN THE COUNTRY SINCE PRESIDENT YAHYA LIFTED, AT MIDNIGHT ON 31 DECEMBER, THE BAN THAT HE IMPOSED ON SUCH GATHERINGS IN MARCH LAST YEAR.

PRESIDENT YAHYA, THE ARMY COMMANDER, BANNED ALL POLITICAL ACTIVITY WHEN HE CAME TO POWER ON THE FALL OF PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN FOLLOWING NATIONWIDE RIOTS AND DEMONSTRATIONS.

POLITICAL PARTIES ARE NOW ALLOWED TO START CAMPAIGNING AND THE PRESIDENT HAS PROMISED A GENERAL ELECTION ON 5 OCTOBER. THE COMMUNIST PARTY, BANNED 15 YEARS AGO, REMAINS SUPPRESSED BUT PRESIDENT YAHYA HAS SAID THAT THE PARLIAMENT ELECTED IN OCTOBER COULD DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO LIFT THIS BAN.

THE PAKISTAN PEOPLE'S PARTY HELD ITS MEETING IN NISHTAR PARK AND WAS ATTENDED BY BOTH SUPPORTERS OF THE PARTY AND MEMBERS OF THE LEFT-WING NATIONAL AWAMI PARTY, WHO DEMONSTRATED AGAINST THE PPP. THE MEETING WAS ADDRESSED BY MR. BHUTTO, THE PPP's CHAIRMAN, AND ANOTHER PARTY LEADER, MR. MIRAJ MOHAMMAD.

PAKISTAN IS NOW ALIVE WITH POLITICAL ACTIVITY IN ANTICIPATION OF THE PROMISED ELECTION.
