    The United Nations Security Council on Monday (18 August) voted to accept applications from three West African countries to join the world body.

    They are the Republic of Cape Verde, the Republic of Sao Tome-Principe and the Peoples Republic of Mozambique, all former Portuguese colonies.

    They will be formally admitted at next month's session of the General Assembly.

    Mozambique was given independence on 25 June, Cape Verde on 5 July and Sao Tome-Principe on 12 July.

    The three countries were welcomed into the United Nations by the Tanzanian ambassador, Mr. Salim Salim and the Portuguese ambassador.
