Background: Probably the world's most ambitious football education programme started in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on Sunday (21 November). The scheme is organised by the International Football Federation -- FIFA -- and sponsored by Coca Cola.
SYNOPSIS: The British chairman of the FIFA development programme, Mr. Harry Cavan, opened the seminar.
Kevin Verity, a former professional footballer in England, lectured on coaching techniques to the 170 Ethiopians at the seminar. He was asked to take charge of the Trinidad national team for the build-up to the 1974 World Cup. He was so successful with this team, that Trinidad posed a real threat to their qualifying group, and missed the finals in Munich by one goal.
The idea of promoting football through seminars like this was the idea of the FIFA president, Joao Havelange. Ethiopia is the first stage in this programme, as an honour to Mr. Yidnekatchew Tessema, President of the African Football Confederation and commissioner for Sports and Culture in Ethiopia. Verity is part of a team from the English Football Association and similar teams of instructors will be drawn from Europe and South America to pass on their knowledge to countries in Africa, Asia, North and Central America, the Caribbean and Australasia.
