  • Description

Using 1,050 million dollar equipment imported from the United States, Japan goes ahead with undersea oil boring trials off Michikawa.

If the rig proves successful it will be used in the future by Japan for developing oil resources in Kuwait.

The new equipment, like a triangular desk upside down, can stand up to gales of over 120 m.p.h. Capable of boring down 1,500 meters below sea bottom by means of a 45-meter long tower lowered from the floating equipment, it even includes a helicopter landing platform.

Undersea Oil Well Boring Trial Gets Under Way.

What is believed the first trial boring of an undersea oil well has got under way here in Japan.

Recently work of assembling undersea oil well boring equipment imported from the United States was completed by the Oil Resources Development Company and the trial boring was started in the sea off Michikawa in Akita Prefecture.

The new equipment like a triangular desk upside down is being towed by a tug boat to the scene of the trial boring from Tsuchizaki Port in the prefecture.

On arrival at the scene, work of boring gets under way. The machine is able to bore down 1,500 meters deeper from the bottom of the sea by means of a 45-meter-long tower lowered from the floating equipment.

The equipment imported from the United States is capable of doing work without being affected by 56-meter velocity winds. It cost some ???1,050 million.

Even a helicopter can make landing or start from the top of the equipment.

The efficiency of the new machine is expected to contribute a great deal to the development of Japan's undersea oil resources in the future.

This type of machine is scheduled to be used by Japan for developing oil resources in Kuwait in Arabia in the future. For this reason, what the current trial will accomplish is worthy of great attention.
