Background: Nasser and a VIP audience of top UAR officers, officials and foreign ambassadors reviewed a three-hour military parade marking the seventh anniversary of Egypt's July 23 Revolution. As usual, the show was heavily weighted with Soviet equipment. But this year it was larger, more lavish and included also Egyptian-made Gomhuriya trailer planes.

Western military attaches reported no surprises. They said the most impressive equipment on display included the 55-ton Joseph Stalin-3 heavy tanks, the SU-100 self propelled guns, Mig-17s and Ilyushin 14s and 28s. British tanks and vehicles were also on display. Units from both Egypt and Syria participated. The Syrian participation was the largest in any parade held in Cairo since the creation of the UAR.
