Background: The funeral service of Mimi Rossetto, queen of the gypsies, was held yesterday, April 26th, in the church of Lendinara, a quarter of Rovigo city.

A vast crowd of sightseers and pressmen drawn from all over Italy, and abroad, mills around the tent which was the residence of the gypsy queen during her illness.

Members of the gypsy fraternity gather round to pay last farewells before the procession forms up to proceed to the church and the interment.

The cortege is witness in the streets by silent crowds. In accordance with tradition, on returning from the ceremony the gypsies wash their hands and faces before re-entering their camp. This done, the tent of the deceased gypsy queen is set on fire.
