  • Description

Argentine army troops have been patrolling Cordoba streets during a state of emergency, declared on Thursday (18 March), following nearly a week of rioting. Workers had been striking and then rioting in the industrial city in protest at the new Governor......Jose Camillo Uriburu...at the beginning of the mouth. The unrest contributed to the early resignation of the new Governor after only two weeks of office. A retired Rear-Admiral, Halvio Gouzden, has since been appointed to take full though temporary control of the province.

Last Monday (15 March) unrest came to a head when militant union leaders encouraged a mass walk-out of factory workers. During the week's rioting more than 100 shops were looted and gutted by fire, and 350 people were arrested.

This film which shows military vehicles and personnel on duty in the streets, reveals something of the tension which still exists in Cordoba.
