Background: A new international airport has been opened in Taiwan to cope with steadily-growing tourist and business traffic, The new facility which handled its first scheduled flights this week (26 February) is to be known as the Chiang-Kai-shek International Airport.
SYNOPSIS: The new airport has taken seven years to build and cost 300 million dollars (150 million pounds). It is four times the size of the present airport at Taipei and has become the new gateway into Taiwan. It is expected to handle about 66,000 flights a year.
The airport has been designed to cater for six million passengers a year and offers many modern facilities. The latest electronic devices will help inform passengers about their flights.
The new airport will relieve the congestion that has been occurring at Taipei International Airport. The main runway is over 3,600 yards (3,300 metres) long, enough to handle the largest jets at a rate of more than 40 flights an hour. The favourable climate means few flights are likely to be cancelled because of poor weather.
China Airlines plans to operate more that 100 flights to 11 countries, and other airlines will link Taiwan to many more world-wide destinations. Despite the recent break in relations with the United States, the taiwanese expect the airport to be an important factor in forging international links.
