  • Description

SOVIET ENGINEERS HAD TO WORK FAST TO CONTAIN A DANGEROUSLY EXPLOSIVE GAS FOUNTAIN IN THE NORTHERN PART OF THE TOMSK DISTRICT IN THE USSR RECENTLY. THE GAS FOUNTAIN, RISING FROM THE EARTH AT A PRESSURE OF 260 ATMOSPHERES, OCCURRED DURING EXTRACTION OF GAS DEPOSITS IN THE AREA.

THE GAS FOUNTAIN THREATENED TO EXPLODE WITHOUT NOTICE. ENGINEERS DECIDED TO COVER THE OPENING OF THE ???-HOLE WITH STEEL BLOCKS.

EACH BLOCK WEIGHED MORE THAN 600 POUNDS (300 KGMS), AND HAD TO BE LOWERED INTO POSITION WITH DELICACY AND SKILL.

THE FOUNTAIN HAS NOW BEEN EFFECTIVELY QUELLED, AND ROUTINE EXTRACTION WORK HAS BEEN RESUMED.
