  • Description

The Institute of Hygiene in Abidjan was one of many clinics besieged by people anxious to be vaccinated against cholera in the Ivory Coast on Tuesday (11 September). Following the World Health Organisation (WHO) report of a serious outbreak of the disease in neighbouring Guinea two weeks ago the Ivory Coast Ministry of Health has now called on all the people to cooperate in an intensified anti cholera campaign.

Originally the Ministry of Health reacted to the WHO report by giving vaccination priority to people travelling to affected of suspected countries, staff in the transport services and people in border areas.

The vaccination measures were designed to prepare the country for massive nation-wide anti-cholera campaign, if this were to prove necessary. A spokesman at the Abidjan institute said on Tuesday that about 15,000 people were now being vaccinated in one day.

Two thousand cases of cholera with sixty deaths had been reported in Guinea last week. This is the first time the disease has spread south of the Sahara and a WHO spokesman said there was a grave threat of cholera spreading into countries neighbouring Guinea.
