    THE MARATHON COURSE TO BE USED IN NEXT YEAR'S TOKYO OLYMPICS WAS TRIED OUT YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) FOR THE ANNUAL MAINICHI MARATHON. SETTING OUT FROM THE NATIONAL STADIUM IN TOKYO, 65 COMPETITORS TOOK PART OVER THE RUN OF 26 MILES 385 YARDS (42.195 KM).

    KENJI KIMIHARA, OF JAPAN, FINISHED FIRST IN 2 HR. 1 MIN 41 SECS BEHIND THIRD WAS THE ONLY OVERSEAS COMPETITOR, DAVE POWER OF AUSTRALIA, FINISHING STRONGLY ONLY 40 SECONDS AFTER SHIGEMATSU. ALL THREE COMPLETED THE COURSE UNDER THE FORMER NATIONAL RECORD TIME.

    MR. DONALD PAIN, HONORARY SECRETARY OF THE INTERNATIONAL AMATEUR ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION, WATCHED THE RACE WITH MEMBERS OF THE JAPANESE OLYMPIC COMMITTEE, WHICH HELPED TO ORGANISE THE MARATHON. HE SAID AFTERWARDS THAT HE HAD BEEN IMPRESSED WITH THE ORGANISATION AND ADDED: "THE HANDLING OF TRAFFIC ON THE ROUTE WAS THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN."
