  • Description

Ecuador's President-elect, Jaime Roldos--at thirty-eight the youngest leader to be elected in the history of Latin America--paid a visit to the United Nations in New York on Tuesday (17 July), to familiarise himself with members of the delegations there. Last April, Roldos scored a crushing victory in Ecuador's first general election for seven years. He will be taking over power from the ruling three-man military junta on his country's National Day on August the tenth, when a new constitution will also come in force. Senor Roldos is currently on a brief fact-finding tour of the United States, where he is expected to seek President Jimmy Carter's support for his country's return to democracy and to obtain better trading preferences. Here Senor Roldos gives his impressions of the visit.
