  • Description

Wax figures of Apollo II astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were being prepared today (Monday) at Madame Tussaud's wax works for display on Wednesday (16 July), the day the Apollo II mission blasts off. The wax portrait figures, to be exhibited in the "Heroes-Live" area of Madame Tussaud's, are part of a full display devoted to the Apollo II flight.

Finishing touches were being applied to the two figures by Tussaud's sculptor Miss Jean Fraser and her assistant, Mr. David Tomkins. Together, they placed the head of the Armstrong figure onto the wax body and put various pieces of equipment, including a model of the life-support system back-pack, into place.

The two figures are dressed in simulated space suits from the American corporation which has supplied the actual lunar walking suits for the Apollo II flight.

The setting for the special display includes an almost full-size aluminum model of the lunar landing vehicle and a simulated lunar surface. Special effects are to include projected colour film of the most recent Apollo missions and music composed specifically for the exhibition.

Workmen were today putting the model of the lunar landing vehicle into place in the exhibition area.
