    THE KENYAN MINISTER OF DEFENCE AND ACTING MINISTER OF FINANCE, DOCTOR NJOROGI MUNGAI, YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) EXCHANGED NOTES WITH THE JAPANESE AMBASSADOR TO KENYA MR. TOSHIO URABE ON A JAPANESE LOAN TO KENYA.

    THE NOTES CONFIRMED AN UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE TWO COUNTRIES THAT JAPAN WOULD PROVIDE LONG-TERM CREDIT TO KENYA IN YEN EQUIPMENT OF UP TO GBP2-MILLION STERLING.

    THE CREDIT WILL BE USED TO FURTHER KENYA'S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND IS EXPECTED TO BE EXPENDED MAINLY FOR PROJECTS IN THE PRIMARY PRODUCE FIELD.

    THE LOAN WILL BE FOR A PERIOD OF EIGHTEEN YEARS AT AN INTEREST RATE OF 5 3/4 PER CENT PER ANNUM.

    MR. URABE GAVE AN UNDERTAKING THAT JAPAN WOULD CONTINUE ITS ENDEAVOURS TO INCREASE ITS IMPORTS FROM KENYA, AND KENYA AUTHORITIES HAVE SAID KENYA'S TRADE WITH JAPAN WILL BE LIBERALISED.

    THE LOAN AGREEMENT WILL BE CONCLUDED SHORTLY BETWEEN THE EXPORT-IMPORT BANK OF JAPAN AND THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT.
