  • Description

Egypt's Interim-President, Anwar El Sadat, has held talks with Soviet and American delegations in Cairo. A wide range of Middle-Eastern and bilateral topics were discussed.

The Soviet delegation headed by Prime Minister Kosygin met Mr. Sadat, and other members of the eight-man Central Committee of the Arab Socialist Union, at the Kubbeh Palace on Friday night (2 October). The union is Egypt's sole recognised political Organisation.

Mr. Kosygin, who arrived in Cairo after the death of President Nasser, stayed on in the city for talks with the Egyptian leadership, and this was the second of two meetings Mr. Kosygin and Mr. Sadat had on Friday.

Also at the Palace were Egyptian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad and Arab guerrilla leader Yassa Arafat, as well as party officials.

Mr. Sadat also met Mr. Elliot Richardson on Friday night (2 October). Mr. Richardson, who is U.S. Secretary for Health and Welfare.... and was representing his country at the Nasser funeral.....was greeted at the Oroba Palace. During the meeting Egyptian Foreign Minister Riad is reported to have questioned Mr. Richardson about the United States' position should Israel attack Egyptian anti-aircraft missile sites along the Suez Canal during the ceasefire period. It's believed no comprehensive answer was given, but Mr. Richardson was hopeful that the American peace initiative could continue.
