Shon Jong-Bae is a 12-year-old boy from South Korea who writes with his toes. he has to. For Shon was born deformed with withered arms and no hands. But he can still feed himself as well as anyone.
Fate dealt another cruel blow to Shon about the time he reached walking age. He developed paralysis and lost the function of his left leg. For most children, this would have been a sentence to a life in bed or a wheelchair.
But not Shon. He walks across the fields each day to school in Monsan Country, 95 miles (150 kms) south of Seoul, and is as active as any of his schoolmates both inside and outside the classroom.
It was the village schoolmaster who developed Shon into an active boy. He forced him to do the impossible - ranging from writing to playing games.
Academically, he has become a fine student. Despite his tragic disability, he manages to write in a style that would please the most demanding school teacher.
And he excels at play as well. He joins in the shuttlecock and volleyball games and has shown himself to have a sharp eye. Eventually he wants to be a classical playwright. If his intentions can match his courage, Shon will have no trouble achieving his aim.
