  • Description

On Wednesday (19 September), Jordan released the bulk of its political prisoners -- mostly Palestinian Commandos -- under a sweeping amnesty. In all, 764 detainees will be released by order of King Hussein, an order generally welcomed in the Arab world, despite a cool reception from the Palestinian resistance movement itself.

Tuesday night the King personally supervised the release of the first prisoners in Amman. Palestinian Fatah Commando leader Mohammed Daud Odeh (Abu Daud) was among this group.

Most of the prisoners had been in detention since the Jordanian Army closed down the guerrillas' based in heavy fighting during 1970 and 1971.

Crowds of relatives milled around and danced outside Mahatta Central Prison in Amman, awaiting the release. Prisoners will also be released from seven other prisons scattered throughout the country.
