  • Description

FOR NEARLY TWO YEARS HONG KONG HAD SUFFERED FROM AN UNPRECEDENTED DROUGHT.

THE RAINFALL DURING 1963 WAS THE LOWEST EVER RECORDED IN THE COLONY. DURING EMERGENCY PERIODS WATER FOR DRINKING WAS IMPORTED BY TANKER, BUT FOR THE FARMER RAIN WAS THE ONLY POSSIBLE RELIEF FOR PARCHED FIELDS.

RECENTLY (4 MAY) THE PEOPLE OF YUEN LONG DISTRICT DECIDED TO HOLD A SPECIAL FESTIVAL ON THE BIRTHDAY OF TIN HAU - THE "HEAVENLY QUEEN" REPUTED TO HAVE SPECIAL POWERS OVER THE ELEMENTS. THE FARMERS HOPED A SUITABLE DEMONSTRATION ON HER BIRTHDAY NIGHT MIGHT PERSUADE HER TO BRING RAIN.

TIN HAU OBLIGED TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT THE PROCESSION OF DRAGONS, ACROBATS AND FLOATS TOOK PLACE IN A DRENCHING DOWN POUR.

NOBODY MINDED THE RAIN, NOT EVEN THE 50-MAN TEAMS WHO MANIPULATED THE THREE 150-FOOT DRAGONS WHICH WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PARADE. OUT CAME THE UMBRELLAS - AND UNDER EACH A BIG HAPPY SMILE.

ON THAT DAY ALMOST TWO AND A HALF INCHES OF RAIN FELL. IT WAS NOT THE END OF THE DROUGHT BUT IT DID BRING HEARTENING RELIEF FOR HONG KONG.
