Boxing...and Betulio Gonzalez of Venezuela has retained his WBA flyweight crown in a 12th round?
Boxing...and Betulio Gonzalez of Venezuela has retained his WBA flyweight crown in a 12th round knockout over Japanese challenger Shoji Oguma. It's Gonzalez's third successful title defence.
SYNOPSIS: It was the second time the two fighters had met this year. In January, the Venezuelan narrowly retained his title against Oguma on points and the hope crowd was looking forward to a Japanese victory. Oguma, a southpaw, opened the scheduled 15 round ???out with good straight lefts.
Oguma led the early attack, pummeling the champion with head punches. Gonzalez counter-attacked with his right forcing his rival to back-pedal for most of the bout.
At one stage the champion faltered, stumbling for a second before regaining his lost momentum. Oguma closed in hoping, to finish Gonzalez off but the Venezuelan proved too strong.
One minute, twenty-two seconds into the 12th round, the challenger took a short right to the face, fell and was counted out.
Afterwards, Gonzalez declared Oguma was a good fighter who displayed fine boxing. It was Gonzalez's 68th victory from 78 bouts and his 45th knockout win. For the Japanese, it was his eight defeat against 31 wins and one draw.
