  • Description

A FURIOUS GALE, REACHING OVER THIRTY MILES AN HOUR AT TIMES, LEFT A TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION AND CHAOS FEB 12 AT HOLSTEBRO, DENMARK. DAMAGE TO THE LITTLE TOWN WAS ESTIMATED AT AROUND GBP700,000 - BUT, FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS KILLED.

HUNDREDS OF BUILDINGS LOST ROOFS AND WINDOWS; DEBRIS, STREWN EVERYWHERE, MADE THE TOWN LOOK LIKE A BATTLEFIELD. FIREMEN AND POLICE WERE CALLED IN FROM SURROUNDING AREAS TO CLEAR AWAY HEAVY TIMBER AND RUBBLE THAT HAD FALLEN ON MANY CARS. SEVERAL FARMS IN OUTLYING DISTRICTS WERE DESTROYED.

MANY OF THE POPULATION ESCAPED INJURY BY TAKING REFUGE IN WORLD WAR TWO AIR-RAID SHELTERS. ONE MAN, THE ONLY CASUALTY IN THE TOWN, WAS CUT BY FLYING GLASS BUT WAS RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL THE SAME AFTERNOON.
