Austerity has hit the bastion of American Democracy. The White House is cutting down on?

  • Description

Austerity has hit the bastion of American Democracy. The White House is cutting down on its traditional image of affluence.

So much so, that President Nixon has put to small Presidential yachts up for sale. Named after his daughters, the yachts are called the Tricia and Julie.

But if the buyer response is the same as it has been for the former Presidential yacht, Potomac, the President may have to wait some time.

The Potomac was launched in 1935 and started life as a Coast Guard cutter. She soon became a floating White House and was nicknamed Shangri-la.

Once she played host to Kings, Queens and Prime Ministers. But since then the yacht has changed hands several times. Now the Potomac is up for sale again.

She was last purchased by a group of businessmen who hoped to turn her into a floating museum alongside the former Atlantic liner, Queen Mary.

Extended delays have proved too expensive for her owners and now, rusted and stripped of her fittings, she's up for sale again.

Estimates are that it will cost around a quarter of a million U.S. dollars to refit and it's feared the Potomac may end up as scrap material.
