  • Description

IN DJAKARTA, PRESIDENT SUKARNO HAS CLAIMED THAT HE IS STILL THE LEADER OF INDONESIA. AT A RECEPTION ON WEDNESDAY IN THE HOTEL INDONESIA TO CELEBRATE PAKISTAN'S NATIONAL DAY, THE PRESIDENT REFUTED REPORTS THAT HE HAD BEEN DEPOSED BY THE ARMY. HE TOLD REPORTERS: "NO.. I DID NOT ASK FOR ASYLUM. I AM NOT AILING. I WAS NOT TOPPLED. I DID NOT COMMIT SUICIDE BECAUSE I LOVE LIFE."
CO-INCIDING WITH THE RECEPTION CAME UNANIMOUS APPROVAL FROM THE INDONESIAN PEOPLE'S PARLIAMENT OF THE ARREST OF 15 CABINET MINISTERS. THESE INCLUDE PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S CLOSE PERSONAL ADVISER, FORMER FOREIGN MINISTER, DR SUBANDRIO. THE MINISTERS WERE TAKEN INTO "PROTECTIVE CUSTODY" ON MARCH 18 ON THE ORDER OF GENERAL SUHARTO, THE INDONESIAN ARMY LEADER.

THIS WEEK'S APPEARANCE BY PRESIDENT SUKARNO AT THE HOTEL INDONESIA WAS HIS FIRST IN PUBLIC SINCE THE ARRESTS. SURROUNDED BY FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS HE SAID HE WAS STILL PRESIDENT, COMMANDER IN CHIEF, PRIME MINISTER, AND LEADER OF THE REVOLUTION.

LATER HE MET WITH A PRESIDIUM OF MILITARY AND CIVILIAN LEADERS IMPLEMENTING POLICIES OF GENERAL SUHARTO. THE PRESIDENT WAS REPORTED TO HAVE REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE COMPOSITION OF A NEW CABINET OF 24 OR 25 MEMBERS TO REPLACE HIS CONTROVERSIAL ONE OF 100 MEMBERS. HOWEVER, INDONESIAN OFFICIALS SAID HIS RESISTANCE WAS EXPECTED TO MAKE LITTLE DIFFERENCE.
