  • Description

In the Khmer Republic government and Communist forces have this week been locked in battle only two miles (3 kms) from the capital's Pochentong airport which recently came under rocket attack.

A squadron of armoured personnel carriers backed up two battalions of infantry from the Khmer Republic's 28th Brigade on Monday (7 January) as they prepared to engage the Communists.

Khmer government sources later confirmed by American Embassy sources indicated that over two thousand Communists had infiltrated the airport area over the weekend. According to local inhabitants, the Khmer Rouge had also overrun over ten villages and abducted hundreds of men and women whom they were holding in a strongly fortified area.

The Khmer Government forces began their operation shortly after midday and soon came under heavy fire in the closest fighting to the airport since last August's American bombing halt.

The government reported light casualties at fist but fighting was expected to become more intensive with resultant higher losses as fighting approached closer to the airport and also to the capital of Phnom Penh which has come under attack from Soviet-made 122mm rockets.

Refugees have been streaming into the city during the fighting.
