Tests are being carried out in Washington, U.S.A., with a new device which may prove the answer to cutting down the time between an urgent call to a heart attack patient and when treatment is administered. Doctors agree that the most critical time for a person suffering a heart attack is in the first few minutes.
Because of the shortage of doctors the new unit looks like proving invaluable. When the unit is called to treat a heart attack patient a nurse and aide attach a number of instruments to his body. Through an electronic link the patient's heart beat impulses are relayed to the doctor who might be miles away from the mobile unit. From instruments in his surgery, the doctor can determine the correct treatment. He relays this to the nurse and aide by radio. The treatment is given and hopefully the patient recovers.
The new unit cuts off the time it took before to transport the patient to hospital. Doctors who have seen the new unit say it is the greatest advance in heart attack treatment in recent years.
