  • Description

Firemen and Federal investigators have been hard at work for three days, clearing and searching through the debris of the two airliners which collided over New York, December 16.

Federal investigators plan to question at least 10 New Yorkers who claim they actually saw the collision over Staten Island.

While the inquiry is moving ahead in New York, a flight recorder recovered from the United Air Lines DC8 jet is on its way to its manufacturer in California where it will be given a detailed analysis under Civil Aeronautics Board supervision. It could hold the secret of what caused the disaster, by giving headings, altitudes and position at the time of the crash.

The death toll stands at 135 but has fluctuated because police have been unable to determine the whereabouts of all those believed to be tenants of the buildings smashed and burned by the plane which crashed in Brooklyn.
