Background: World Cup semi-finalists France defeated Hungary 1-0 in a friendly international soccer fixture at the Parc des Princes in Paris on October 6, France, in the blue shirts, had most of the play throughout but were unable to turn possession into goals. Alain Giresse, one of the stars of the French World Cup team, came close to scoring in the first half but Katzirz in the Hungarian goal was able to save his shot. France did put the ball in the net once during the first 45 minutes only for the referee to disallow the goal because of an infringement. The second half conformed to the same pattern: French pressure without reward. Michel Platini, the gifted Juventus midfield-player, was guilty of shooting wide from close range, and France were unable to capitalise on errors in the Hungarian defence. But as the match seemed to be drifting towards an uninspiring draw it was Roussey, the French centre-forward, who broke the deadlock. So Hungary, who must face England in the European Nations' Cup qualifying tournament, returned to Budapest on the wrong end of a one-nil scoreline. Final score: France 1, Hungary 0.
