A bas-relief plaque, commemorating Korean students killed in the student-generated revolution a year ago, was unveiled at Seoul University on April 18th. Those attending the unveiling were addressed by the University President, Yu Jin-O, and another speaker was the Prime Minister, Mr. John Chang.
Further anniversary celebrations for the revolution, which ousted President Syngman Rhee, took place on April 19th. At Seoul Stadium, a big rally was addressed by the Prime Minister. Among the audience were bereaved relations of students killed in the revolution.
The anniversary was also marked by considerable unrest, caused by dissatisfaction with current living standards in South Korea, and Government efforts to tighten up security measures and the control of public demonstrations. 1,500 Seoul students refused to attend the Stadium rally, and staged a protest march instead. They complained that the aims of the revolution had not been fulfilled.
