  • Description

Some 3,000 left-wing demonstrators marched through the streets of Lisbon on Tuesday (28 September) to mark the second anniversary of the forced resignation of President Antonio de Spinola.

SYNOPSIS: The demonstrators shouted slogans as they marched through the capital. They shouted "Spinola, Pide's and Fascists in jail". Pide was the former secrete police force.

The march was peaceful with no evidence of violence. It was organised by the radical leftists of the Popular Unity Dinamyzing group. This group supported the left-wing candidate Major Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho, who came second in the recent presidential elections. The demonstrators called for the imprisonment of former President Spinola who was forced to resign because of alleged involvement in abortive right-wing coup. They were protesting at Spinola's recent return from Brazilian exile. Spinola was arrested last month on his return, but released after two days because the military high command said there was no legal reason to detain him.
