  • Description

ANOTHER SCHEDULED LAUNCHING OF BRITAIN'S BLUESTREAK ROCKET FROM WOOMERA, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, WAS CALLED OFF ON JUNE 2 ONLY TWO SECONDS FROM BLAST OFF. THE COUNTDOWN WENT PERFECTLY UNTIL MINUS THREE SECONDS WHEN OVER THE BROADCAST SYSTEM CAME THE CALL OF "STOP, STOP, STOP."
A CLOUD OF GAS AND THRUSTING FLAMES WAS ISSUING FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE ROCKET WHEN THE "STOP" CAME. SMOKE AND WHITE VAPOUR BILLOWED AROUND THE BASE. EARLIER, THERE WAS A DELAY OF HALF AN HOUR DUE TO A MONITORING FAULT.

BLUESTREAK IS BEING TESTED AS THE FIRST STAGE BOOSTER ROCKET OF A THREE-STAGE EUROPEAN ROCKET, EUROPA ONE, TO PUT A SATELLITE INTO ORBIT IN 1966.
