  • Description

Municipal, federal and foreign representatives met at Seestrasse cemetery in West Berlin, June 17 - "Day of German Unity", to mark the seventh anniversary of the abortive East German uprising.

In the presence of British, American and French diplomats, West Berlin's Mayor Willy Brandt laid a wreath at the cemetery's memorial for the men and women who lost their lives when Russian tanks and East German people's police crushed their attempt to shake off the shackles of an imposed Communist regime.

The anniversary was celebrated throughout West Germany at a number of mass meetings demanding self-determination for all Germans. Celebrations including the unveiling of monuments, torchlight processions and bonfires culminated in a meeting at the Hohe Meissner, the highest point along the East German frontier, where President Luebke spoke in an address directed at the youth of the two Germanies.
