MR. IAN SMITH, LEADER OF THE RHODESIAN REGIME, SPOKE OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES GOING "CAP IN?

  • Description

IAN SMITH ADDRESSING THE CONGRESS (SOF).

"AND SO THE ROAD AHEAD, AS I SEE IT, IS ABSOLUTELY CLEAR. I DON'T THING THERE CAN BE ANY DOUBT IN ANYBODY'S MIND. WE SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE. WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT. WE'VE BEEN SUCCESSFUL BECAUSE WE WERE VIRTUALLY INDEPENDENT BEFORE WE DECLARED OUR INDEPENDENCE. AND THIS IS THE BIG FAILURE SO FAR AS SO MANY OF THE COUNTRIES TO THE NORTH OF US ARE CONCERNED. THEY GOT SOMETHING BY NAME, HANDED TO THEM ON A PLATE. BUT IN REALITY, IN FACT, THEY DIDN'T HAVE IT, THEY NEVER HAD IT. AND WHEN YOU WANT TO GO CAP IN HAND THE NET DAY ASKING FOR HELP FROM OTHER PEOPLE, THEN, THIS IS NOT INDEPENDENCE. IT'S CERTAINLY NOT THE SOR OF INDEPENDENCE THAT I WOULD WISH TO HAVE. WE'VE GOT REAL INDEPENDENCE. WE HAVE PROVED OUR CASE. WE KNOW THAT IT IS SUCCESSFUL. AND WE HAVE LIVED CHEEK BY JOWL WITH THE BRITISH POLICY IN AFRICA -- WE HAVE SEEN IT FAIL AND CRUMBLE. WE HAVE SEEN HOW UNSUCCESSFUL IT'S BEEN. THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE AND IF WE WERE TO PAUSE FOR ONE MOMENT TO CONSIDER ANY OTHER SUCH ALTERNATIVES THAT MAY BE PUT BEFORE US, THEN LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I SAY TO YOU, WE WOULD BE STARK, STARING MAD. NO, SIR. WE HAVE SET OUR COURSE AND FROM NOW ON IT IS OUR INTENTION TO GO ON PADDLING OUR OWN CANOE."

Background: MR. IAN SMITH, LEADER OF THE RHODESIAN REGIME, SPOKE OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES GOING "CAP IN HAND" FOR HELP THE DAY AFTER RECEIVING INDEPENDENCE, WHEN HE ADDRESSED THE THREE-DAY ANNUAL CONGRESS OF THE RULING RHODESIAN FRONT PARTY IN SALISBURY ON FRIDAY. HE CONTRASTED THIS WITH THE SITUATION IN RHODESIA, WHICH HE CLAIMED HAD BEEN "VIRTUALLY INDEPENDENT" BEFORE IT DECLARED ITS INDEPENDENCE IN NOVEMBER 1965.

SOME 800 DELEGATES ATTENDED THE CONGRESS, WHICH ENDED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY). OBSERVERS SAY THE CONGRESS WAS MARKED BY A STRONG THEME OF RIGHT-WING RADICALISM, IN SPITE OF THE DEFEAT OF SEVERAL RESOLUTIONS TO MAKE RHODESIA MORE LIKE SOUTH AFRICA. MR. SMITH TOLD THE DELEGATES....
