  • Description

Senator George McGovern, a leading critic of United States involvement in the Vietnam war, and a left-winger in the domestic political spectrum, emerged as a leading contender for the Democrat Presidential nomination on Wednesday, as voting figures were published for the Wisconsin primary election held on Tuesday.

The 49-year-old McGovern captured 30 per cent of the vote and the support of 54 of the 67 delegates the State will send to the Party Convention at which the Democrat candidate will be chosen.

Governor George Wallace, a southerner making his first attempt at a northern primary during this campaign, took second place with 22 per cent of the poll, after only eight days of campaigning. He finished one per cent ahead of Senator Hubert Humphrey.

After the results were announced, the leading men made victory speeches to supporters at their respective campaign headquarters.
