  • Description

THE NEW VALLEY IN EGYPT - ONCE A LAND OF PLENTY IN THE DAYS OF THE PHAROAHS - BUT UNTIL RECENTLY A DESERT, A WASTELAND OF SAHARA SAND.

NOW THE NEW VALLEY, ABOUT 100 MILES (160 KILOMETRES) WEST OF EGYPT FAMOUS VALLEY OF THE KINGS AT LUXOR, IS BEING RESTORED TO ITS FORMER FERTILITY. AND THE SECRET - WATER. AN OCEAN HAS BEEN FOUND DEEP UNDER THE SAHARA SANDS.

TWO AMERICANS ENGINEERS, OPERATING UNDER AN AMERICAN AID PROGRAMME HAVE BEEN "WILDCATTING" (HAPHAZARD SEARCHING) FOR WATER AIDED BY TEAMS OF EGYPTIAN DRILLING CREWS AND USING TECHNIQUES COMMONLY IDENTIFIED WITH OIL PROSPECTING. IN THREE YEARS OF EFFORT THEY'VE SCORED A MAJOR SUCCESS WITH MORE THAN 200 WELLS ALL PRODUCING WATER.

THEY ARE ARTESIAN WELLS WHICH SPOUT WATER AT TERRIFIC PRESSURE AND AT VERY HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 110 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT (44 CENTIGRADE). THE DRILLING CREWS ROAM THE AREA IN THE WESTERN DESERT, BUT OPERATIONS HAVE PROVED MOST SUCCESSFUL IN THE AREA ROUND THE DAKHLA OASIS. WHEN ONE WELL IS DUG THE DRILLING CREW STOW THEIR GEAR ON TRUCKS, STRIKE CAMP AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT SITE.

THE UNDERGROUND SOURCE OF FRESH WATER IS BELIEVED TO BE EITHER LAKE CHAD, OR IN ETHIOPIA, MORE THAN A THOUSAND MILES DISTANT. SOUNDINGS INDICATE THE "UNDERGROUND OCEAN" COVERS AN AREA FIFTY MILES (80 KILOMETERS) LONG BY 25 MILES (40 KILOMETERS) WIDE. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THERE IS SUFFICIENT WATER THERE TO LAST AT LEAST 200 YEARS.

DRILLING RIGS AND EQUIPMENT BORE DEEP INTO THE SAND AND FIND WATER AT A DEPTH OF 3,000 FEET; AN ARTESIAN WELL SPOUTS FRESH WATER TO A HEIGHT OF 65 FEET BEFORE IT IS CAPPED AND BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL. IT CONTAINS SULPHUR AND IRON, CORRODES PIPES, BUT DOES NOT HARM CROPS AND IS FOUND TO BE HIGHLY DRINKABLE. IT IS "COOLED" IN CONCRETE CISTERNS AND PIPED OFF INTO IRRIGATION CANALS FOR AGRICULTURAL NEEDS.

THE MODERN MIRACLE?... RICE PADDIES IN THE ONCE ARID SAHARA! CROPS OF TOMATOES, POTATOES, WHEAT, BEANS AND BARLEY .... AND THE VISION OF THREE CROPS A YEAR WHEN THE FARM COMMUNITY GETS UNDER FULL PRODUCTION. AND THERE'S DAIRY CATTLE AND POULTRY BEING INTRODUCED AS WELL. IT ALL ADDS UP TO A NEW LIFE IN THE NEW VALLEY.

THE UNITED STATES PROVIDES ONLY THE ENGINEERS AND THE DRILLING RIGS; EGYPT PAYS FOR ALL OPERATIONAL COSTS, THE LIVING AND HOUSING OF THE 30-MAN DRILLING CREWS. U.S. AGRICULTURAL EXPERTS WORK WITH EGYPT (U.A.R.) FARM TECHNICIANS TO PICK THE MOST USEFUL SEEDLINGS AND TO INTRODUCE THE BEST TECHNIQUES.

"WILDCATING" FOR WATER IS TURNING THE CENTURIES OLD WASTELAND INTO A BURGEONING COMMUNITY AROUND THE DAKHLA OASIS. FARM FAMILIES HAVE BEEN SETTLED ON FIVE ACRE LANDSITES, HELPED WITH THEIR NEW CROPS, EDUCATED IN MODERN FARMING TECHNIQUES. THEY'RE GROWING ENOUGH FOR THEIR NEEDS AND WILL EVEN HAVE SOME SURPLUS FOR EXPORTS.
