    POULTRY FARMERS IN WEST FRANCE STAGED A PROTEST MARCH THROUGH CHOLET YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AGAINST FALLING PRICES. THE REGION PRODUCES ABOUT ONE QUARTER OF FRENCH POULTRY OUTPUT.

    THE MARCHERS WENT TO THE SUB-PREFECTURE TO HAND IN A PETITION FOR FORWARDING TO THE GOVERNMENT. THEY ALSO HANDED IN FOUR CHICKS FOR THE SUB-PREFECT. ONE THOUSAND POULTRY FARMERS TOOK PART IN THE MARCH. THEY CLAIM POULTRY PRICES HAVE COLLAPSED BY A HALF IN THE LAST YEAR.

    INTENSIVE BREEDING IN THE REGION HAS LED TO A SHARP RISE IN PRODUCTION, BUT FRENCH HOUSEWIVES HAVE NOT BEEN ATTRACTED BY THE LOW PRICES. A GLUT HAS RESULTED.

    POULTRY EXPORTS TO THE COMMON MARKET ARE ALSO DOWN IN THE FACE OF AMERICAN AND DUTCH COMPETITION. TO HELP EASE THE SURPLUS, THE FRENCH ARMY IS TO BUY 2,000 TONS OF FROZEN CHICKEN. AND THE GOVERNMENT IS TO SEEK POULTRY PRICE REFORM IN THE COMMON MARKET.
